"If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water."

Water Myths

DON'T SWALLOW THE MYTHS

Perhaps you've heard some extravagant claims about a "super duper" water that will work miracles for your health, or shocking stories about distilled water that have given you second thoughts about drinking it. The myths have been spun and perpetuated by sales hucksters to increase market share for their products. To put those claims to rest, here is the truth regarding some of the myths.

Myth: Simple H2O isn't good enough.
Truth: In reality, distilled water is simply pure water that functions perfectly in your body to hydrate, flush, dissolve, transport, lubricate and cushion. Steam distillation is a time-tested and proven method of producing pure water that is based on real science. Some self-proclaimed "water authorities" shout the virtues of energized, alkalized, oxygenated, structured, bonded, magnetized, clustered, or mineralized water. The idea is that simple H2O is no longer good enough and must be manipulated or altered to produce some kind of "miracle cure." But their claims have no basis in fact whatsoever. While they sound intriguing and people naturally want to believe in them, these so-called "super duper" waters are nothing more than the brainchild of shrewd marketers preying on people's wallets.

They offer "water energizers" which are scientifically impossible. Energized water is reputed to inherit magical properties because of its "spin" to dramatically improve your energy levels and accelerate healing. Unfortunately, the only real "spin" is the yarn spun by the promoters.

The pH of water is a major focus of some water bottlers and makers of water treatment devices. They will tell you that if water is too acidic, it will alter your body's pH balance with dire results. So the hucksters promote" ionization" to alter the pH of your drinking water by electrolysis. (A brief pH primer: pH indicates acidity or alkalinity. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. Lower values are acidic and values higher than 7.0 are alkaline. The pH of a lemon is about 2.5, and normal groundwater ranges from about 6.0 to 8.5). If the "ionized" water is purported to have a pH of 10.0, bear in mind that the digestive juices in your stomach range from 1.0 to 3.0. So while you may drink "alkaline" water, it won't stay that way long enough to have any effect on your body's pH balance.

"Oxygenated" waters are touted everywhere today, especially as sports drinks. These high priced waters supposedly improve physical function by delivering more oxygen to your cells. One breath contains more oxygen than a whole bottle of "super oxygenated" water and your lungs are specially designed to deliver oxygen to your bloodstream (not your stomach). Breathe deeply and save your money.

"Structured," "bonded," "magnetized," and "clustered" waters are all problematic for one reason. The size and shape of a water molecule cannot be altered and then preserved in its "altered state" until you drink it. Your glass of water contains a network of molecules and the connections between those molecules is continually changing and rearranging. So even if some water wizard conceives a way to tweak the structure of water, it will only last a fraction of a second.

Myth: Beneficial minerals come from drinking water.
Truth: The type and amount of minerals found in tap water vary greatly, making water an inconsistent and unreliable source of minerals. In addition, we don't know for sure if the minerals in water-essentially dissolved rock, can even be absorbed by the human body. We do know a well-balanced diet provides an abundancce of organic minerals. In fact, The American Medical Journal states, "the body's need for minerals is largely met through foods, NOT DRINKING WATER." Drinking pure distilled water rather than "mineral" water will not cause a mineral deficiency. Yes, it's true that distillation does remove all minerals. It also effectively removes all other contaminants.

Myth: Distilled water leaches minerals from the body.
Truth: The theory put forth here is that distilled water is "aggressive" and will remove minerals you need to maintain good health. This is an absurd claim because it is scientifically impossible! Once you ingest minerals, they become organically bound and there is no physiological way for distilled water to "rob" your body of nutrients that have become part of the body's cell structure. Your body has a built in mechanism to prevent such a thing from happening. It's called homeostasis.

Homeostasis is the control of ion and water concentrations in the body's fluids. All organs and tissues of the body are involved in this process. When concentrations of a substance like sodium, potassium or calcium changes, water moves across the cell wall to equalize it. So changes in concentrations from consuming distilled water (or any other water) are compensated for immediately.

Myth: Distilled water tastes "flat."
Truth: Since most people don't like the taste of their tainted tap water, they substitute flavored beverages that tantalize their taste buds. You have no idea how delicious water can be until you experience fresh, homemade distilled water. Pure water that's tasteless and odorless as nature intended. Just read our testimonials and you'll see again and again how our purifiers produce delicious, satisfying water.

The old adage, "if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is" applies. Marketers use junk science to openly promote false, misleading and unsubstantiated claims about their products. Sure, some people may experience improved health after drinking these "altered waters." But consider this; simply increasing your water intake - in and of itself - is proven to enhance your health.

Myth: Homemade distilled is complicated and expensive.
Truth: Compared to the uncertainty that comes with a filter system and the expense and storage of bottled water, home distillation is a breeze. Waterwise purifiers are as easy to use as a coffeemaker and cost much less to operate than you might think. See Comparisons
